Hadrian’s Wall marked the northern boundary of the Roman Empire. A significant portion of the wall still exists.
It is described as the most important monument built by the Romans in Britain.
Hadrian’s Wall runs from Segedumum at Wallsend to the Solway Firth and stretches some 73 miles across. The national trail was opened in 2003.
There is an excellent section from Steel Rigg across the open countryside that passes through Birdoswald with its fort and museum,
which is the best surviving sample of a Roman fort. The Pennine Way long distance path joins Hadrian’s wall at Greenhead.
As the path approaches Walton you pass by the Banks Turret. This section of Hadrian’s Wall trail which runs from Walton to
Newtown has some stunning views of the North Pennines, Lanercost Priory is a short walk to the south of the trail, much of the priory
was built with stones taken from the actual wall.
